How we shoot the show
Russell writes......

Pre-production
One of the biggest dilemmas that faced us when we embarked on The Diceman was that if we were to stay true to the dice and really try to find out what life would be like living in a random fashion we would have to be as flexible as possible.

Consequently traditional programme making techniques such as using researchers, location planning, a large television crew and so on, would not benefit the ideals of The Diceman concept. We therefore concluded that we had no choice but to travel light so we could adapt to any given situation. It was decided to embark on these journeys with just the two of us out on the road.

On location
I had worked with Shaun some years before on another project and I felt he would be perfect for the job of Camerman/Director. He agreed to join the team and we decided on a plan of action.

Firstly, our camera kit had to be light enough for Shaun to carry around all day - after careful consideration and analyses of what the market had to offer, we decided to use a specially adapted Sony VX 1000 Mini DV Camera fitted with a wide angle lens, lights, extra batteries, plus a special camera and radio mic system.

We realised that we would have to compromise on image and sound quality, but for us on The Diceman content is king!.

Secondly, we realised that the only way to make the show work was to simply get out there and do it. Of course, none of us could predict where we would end up at the end of each day, nor what would happen to us along the way. You cannot plan for the random roll of the dice!

So one day in the spring of 1997 we set off on our journey of random chance and we'e never looked back since!

The editing process
Once back from our travels Shaun watches some 75 hours of videotape and decides what to keep and what to reject - reducing some five hours of rushes per episode down to a manageable two.

Shaun then hands over to the shows editors, Andrew Hunt and Clwyd Parry at VCL in London. They then spend some four days editing each episode down to the 24 minutes required by The Discovery Channel. Their role is crucial as they are responsible for creating the finished programme you see on your screens.
